Google has announced a tie-up with five major libraries to establish a massive online reading room. Millions of books shall be scanned into Google's widely used search engine. 
Google's partners on the project, which is an expansion of its Google Print program that allows users to search inside books, are Harvard University, Stanford University, Oxford University, the University of Michigan and the New York Public Library.

Australian police are investigating a bizarre crime caper: a hair care magnate's alleged plot to rub out his opposition. Seven persons have been arrested so far.

Bouffant baron Gabriel Zakhem appeared in court on Thursday to face conspiracy charges over what was described as a ruthless and elaborate series of arson attacks on rival suppliers of hair and beauty products.

Police alleged that the attacks on dozens of warehouses in Sydney and Melbourne stretching back six years had caused damage totaling A$80 million ($61 million).

Prosecutors said Zakhem, 46, had masterminded a campaign of firebombings that caused millions of dollars of damage to hair and beauty products suppliers in the two eastern cities.

Among other charges, police accused Zakhem and a 25-year-old accomplice of paying three men to burn down a Sydney factory and assault its owner last week.

"It's alleged that Zakhem ... organized a number of arson attacks on competitors' businesses," police said in a statement to the court.

Zakhem was denied bail and remanded to appear in court again next week.

Below-shoulder massage banned in South China's Guangzhou

The administration of south China's Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, has issued a regulation forbidding the masseuse in beauty salons from massaging customers below the shoulder so as to curb possible prostitution.

As the city's first service guidance on hair dressing, the regulations affect all masseuse in all beauty salons, except for cosmetic surgeons.

It will be enforced beginning January 1 next year. The regulations have been put on trial in the Yuexiu district from Wednesday.

Back massages in Thailand-style beauty salons will still be allowed, but consumers can lodge a complaint if they feel uneasy.

Day one of the event showcased P&G's worldclass products through hair zones, color zone and fragrance zone. Day two featured an intensive day-long competition among Asia's best stylists and beauticians who competed in eight categories including ladies & gents commercial hair cut, ladies and gents creative hair cut, ladies elegant evening hairstyle, fantasy hairstyles and bridal make-up.

To commend its winning participants for their exceptional work in hair and make-up, the event culminated in a grand award ceremony. The award ceremony also featured the Wella trend Vision presentation where the audience was given a view of new hairstyles for 2005.

Kobayashi Miharu from Japan was awarded Grand Champion. She won awards in the top three positions in five categories: Fantasy hairstyle, Ladies Elegant Evening Hairstyle, Gents Creative Hair Cut and Ladies Commercial Hair Cut.

Some of the other award winners in various categories were Pakistan's Syeda Sajeha Zahra Gardezi for the most outstanding country performer; China's Shu Ping Zhang for best ladies commercial hair cut; and Malaysia's Tan Liang Seang for best fantasy hairstyle.

The two-day event truly demonstrated that P&G not just develops great beauty products but also gives young experts and hair stylists from across Asia, including India, the opportunity to build their capabilities and showcase their expertise at a global level'.
